For seven months a Florida architect has dreamed that he is a ringmaster losing control of a lion that comes closer each night to killing him. Searching for an explanation alongside his devout wife leads him to a childhood friend missing for ten years, and to a past his body remembers before his mind does.
The novel moves between domestic architecture and inherited violence, between the life a man designs for himself and the one waiting underneath it. It asks what a person owes to a history he did not choose, and whether conviction can be told apart from delusion from the inside.
